We have a prestigious history of innovation, continued expansion and excellent customer
service that has seen the company grow from its humble beginnings in 1860 to its present
day position as one of the most respected businesses in the Yorkshire region.
Open 7 days a week (including Bank Holidays) our three well stocked branches are serviced
from our own sawmills, joinery workshops and pressure treatment facility.

Our trading history since 1860
- 1783 Earliest record of Earnshaw family in timber trade as woodcutters in Kirkburton near Huddersfield
- 1860 Company founded by Job Earnshaw with brothers Ben & William
- 1880 Traction engine replaced by upright boiler & small steam engine for production power
- 1896 Our founder Job Earnshaw died, aged only 60 years old
- 1900 Acquisition of the Foreign Timber Yard sawmill at Doncaster Road, Wakefield
- 1911 Limited company formed
- 1914 First company motor vehicle purchased
- 1916 Power plant upgraded to 80HP Compound horizontal engine with reservoir & chimney construction
- 1916 Sawdust extraction & burning system commissioned; lighting changed from acetylene to gas fuelled
- 1918 40 employees servicing railways, textiles & agricultural sectors
- 1923 Midgley sawmill fire (three month loss of production)
- 1923 Phone lines installed at Midgley (one of only three major users in area)
- 1939 Full electrification at Midgley site
- 1948 Commenced acquiring areas of woodland – Denby Grange Estate circa 1000 acres
- 1960 Investment in vertical upright main saw, chainsaws, forklift trucks & Volvo loading vehicles
- 1963 Doncaster Road sawmill sold
- 1970 Larger forestry wagons and lorries with hiab’s introduced
- 1973 Acquisition of Brigg sawmill
- 1978 Softwood production line introduced at Midgley middle mill
- 1978 Pressure treatment replaced creosote dipping at Midgley
- 1985 Purpose-built small retail/trade shop & sales yard at Midgley
- 1984 Sawmill at Dalton, Thirsk, N.Yorkshire purchased
- 1990 Computer systems commissioned for control of production & processes
- 1992 Larger shop & sales yard at Midgley
- 1993 Dalton sawmill sold
- 1996 Move from Midgley site to Denby Grange ex-colliery site (current location)
- 1996 Midgley (new Denby Grange site) Fencing Centre opens
- 1998 Brigg Fencing Centre opens
- 2007 Acquisition of Wentworth Sawmill
- 2007 Wentworth Fencing Centre opens
- 2010 150 year anniversary of the company with 68 employees at three sites (Midgley, Wentworth, Brigg)
