A better year for butterflies, but experts urge continued action.
This year the Butterfly Conservation’s Big Butterfly Count recorded 1.7 million butterflies and day-flying moths across the UK, between the 18th of July and the 10th of August. Despite these numbers being a vast improvement on the record lows of 2024, experts are warning that urgent measures still need to be taken to reverse long-term decline.
Dr Richard Fox, Head of Science at Butterfly Conservation, has declared that “Whilst we’ve seen noticeably more butterflies during 2025’s Big Butterfly Count, the figures suggest it’s actually been a pretty average year for them by modern standards.” and that “There remains a need for us to take urgent action to support our butterfly populations.”
