This year's fascinating and quirky shortlist is all about survivors.

The Woodland Trust’s Tree of the Year 2026 celebrates ten trees that have lived through the odds: storms, disease, wartime damage, even a cannonball strike, and they’re still standing.

Last year’s winner was Glasgow’s Argyle Street ash, voted for by the public as a wildcard entry. This year, the Trust has opened up two wildcard spots again, alongside eight trees chosen by their expert panel — each with its own remarkable story of resilience.

Trees do a huge amount for us, quietly cleaning the air, cooling our streets, easing flooding and giving wildlife somewhere to call home. Tree of the Year is a chance to say thank you to a few of the toughest ones out there — and to think about the trees in your own garden or neighbourhood that have kept going against the odds.
Voting is open until 5pm on 29 September, with the winner announced in October. Cast your vote here
