Community garden project continues to grow

A community garden project in New Mill on the outskirts of Huddersfield has grown significantly since it began earlier this year, with the help of committed volunteers and local businesses.

At the first ‘Dig Day’ in March, the ‘Earthworks’ project volunteers succeeded in their aim to create a living willow dome structure and also planted potatoes in a small raised bed after some initial clearance work. However, they also took time out to enjoy some hot chocolate, soup and an assortment of cakes around a fire in the garden.

Though the small group of volunteers has been hampered by the wet weather in recent weeks, regular work days have taken place in the community garden every Thursday.

They have managed to dig over more ground, plant more vegetables and several fruit bushes, and after approaching Earnshaws Fencing Centres they now have a new field gate to install.

When we heard about the Earthworks project and what it hopes to achieve we were more than happy to help out by donating one of our high quality timber field gates.

We will be keeping a close eye on the project as it develops over the coming months.
